CATARACT TREATMENT IN KOCHI
What is Cataract?
Have you ever noticed your vision getting cloudier, especially after 45? This could be a sign of cataracts. Cataracts happen when the clear lens inside your eye becomes cloudy, blocking light and making it harder to see clearly. As they get worse, cataracts can blur your vision and affect your daily activities. The good news is there’s a treatment! Cataract surgery can remove the clouded lens and replace it with a clear one, improving your vision significantly.
What are the symptoms of Cataract?
Cataracts cloud the lens of your eye over time, leading to a gradual decline in vision. The most noticeable symptom is often cloudy or blurry vision, like looking through a fog. This cloudiness can worsen, potentially causing blindness if left untreated. The Symptoms of Cataract includ
- Cloudy or Blurred Vision : Objects may appear foggy or unclear
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Needing brighter light to see clearly
- Halos around lights
- Frequent prescription changes for eyeglasses or contact lens
- Trouble in reading
- Faded colors
- Double vision in one eye
If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule a comprehensive eye exam with our ophthalmologists at Kpm Eye Hospital to protect your vision.
What are the causes of Cataract?
Cataracts can develop due to a variety of causes, though aging remains the most common factor. Typically, cataracts begin to form around the age of 40–50 and progressively worsen with age. Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity can accelerate their development. Eye trauma or injury may also lead to lens clouding. In some cases, cataracts are congenital, resulting from genetic factors or infections during pregnancy. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight can damage the proteins in the eye’s lens, increasing the risk of cataracts. Long-term use of corticosteroid medications is another contributing factor. Additionally, habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can create oxidative stress, hastening lens clouding. A history of previous eye surgeries, chronic inflammation, or exposure to radiation—such as through radiation therapy or ionizing agents—can also increase the likelihood of developing cataracts.

How can we prevent or delay Cataract?
Although cataracts cannot always be prevented , especially those related to age, adopting healthy habits and protecting your eyes can help decrease your risk or delay their progression. You can decrease your risk of cataracts by doing the following activities:
- Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays : Wear a hat with a wide brim and sunglasses that are UV protected, when you are outdoors.
- Maintain a Healthy Diet : Include antioxidant-rich foods in your diet
- Manage Health Conditions : Manage diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol.
- Quit Smoking
- Reduce Alcohol Intake
- Use Protective Eyewear
- Schedule Routine Eye Exams
If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule a comprehensive eye exam with our ophthalmologists at Kpm Eye Hospital to protect your vision.

How is cataract diagnosed and treated?
Diagnosing cataracts usually involves a comprehensive cataract eye exam by an ophthalmologist, a doctor specializing in eye care. The exam will likely include a visual acuity test to measure your vision sharpness, a slit-lamp exam to examine the structures of your eye in detail, and a dilated eye exam where eye drops are used to widen your pupils for a better look inside your eye. There is no cure for cataracts, but surgery is the only effective treatment to remove the cloudy lens and restore vision. Cataract surgery is a very common and safe outpatient procedure. During surgery, the ophthalmologist removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). IOLs come in different varieties, and your doctor will discuss the best option for you based on your individual needs. Regular eye exams not only help detect cataracts early but also identify other serious eye conditions like glaucoma.
