Vitreous & Retinal Treatment in Kochi
What is Vitreous & Retinal?
Vitreoretinal refers to the vitreous and retina, two important parts of the eye. The vitreous is a clear, jelly-like substance that fills the center of the eye. It helps maintain the eye’s shape and supports the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye. It’s responsible for converting light into electrical signals that are sent to the brain, allowing us to see.
What are the symptoms of vitreoretinal diseases?
Vitreoretinal diseases can cause a variety of vision problems including difficulty seeing in low light (night blindness), seeing small shapes or spots floating across your vision (floaters), vision that appears darker or less vibrant than usual (dimming vision), sudden or persistent eye pain, rapid loss of vision all at once or in pieces (sudden vision loss), and discomfort or pain in bright light (extreme light sensitivity). If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a retinal specialist as soon as possible.

How are vitreoretinal diseases diagnosed and treated?
Many conditions can affect the vitreous and retina, which are located at the back of the eye and are not visible during a regular eye exam. These include diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, macular degeneration, retinal tears or detachments, subtle eye cancers, retinopathy of prematurity, retinoblastoma, uveitis, flashes and floaters, and retinitis pigmentosa. Vitreoretinal diseases affecting the retina and vitreous gel in the eye are diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam. This exam typically involves a visual acuity test, dilated eye exam, slit-lamp exam, and tonometry. Additional tests like optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, and electroretinography may be used for further evaluation.
Treatment depends on the specific condition. Laser surgery can seal leaks, repair tears, or create supportive scars. Pneumatic retinopexy uses a gas bubble to reposition the retina. Vitrectomy removes some or all of the vitreous gel. Scleral buckle is a supportive band placed around the eye. Injections into the eye can deliver medications to treat conditions like macular degeneration.
